Here's the direct answer: for the houses I work on, an architectural asphalt shingle is the right roof, and a Class 4 impact-rated asphalt shingle is the right roof if you live where hail keeps finding you. Asphalt stays flexible enough to handle a climate that swings from below zero to ninety-plus, it costs a fraction of the premium materials, it repairs cheaply and one piece at a time, and it's the material crews around here install day in and day out. That last point matters more than the brochure ever admits.
Metal is the legitimate step up if you plan to stay in the house a long time and you want a roof that sheds snow and lasts decades. Cedar, tile, and slate all work somewhere β Minnesota is usually not that somewhere, for reasons of maintenance, weight, and cold-weather brittleness. And the honest truth underneath all of it: the material on top is not what decides how long your roof lasts here. Ventilation, ice barrier, flashing details, and installation quality decide that. A budget shingle installed correctly on a well-vented attic will outlive a premium shingle nailed over a hot, wet attic. I've torn off both.

Freeze-thaw cycling. Our roofs don't just get cold β they get cold, warm up, and get cold again, over and over, sometimes inside a single day. Every cycle expands and contracts the roof surface and every fastener in it. Materials that are rigid or brittle when cold crack under that motion. Materials that stay pliable ride it out.
Ice dams. When the upper roof is warm enough to melt snow and the eaves stay cold, meltwater runs down and refreezes at the edge, building a dam that traps standing water behind it. That water then works backward under the shingles β and shingles are designed to shed water running downhill, not to hold a pond. This is why Minnesota reroofs include an ice and water barrier at the eaves, and why an attic that leaks heat is a roofing problem, not just an energy bill.
Hail. The north metro sits in a corridor that gets worked over regularly. Hail bruises the fiberglass mat under a shingle's surface, knocks off the granules that block UV, and dents everything soft on the house. A roof that has taken hail often looks fine from the driveway and is quietly running out of service life.
Wind. Wind lifts tabs, creases shingles across the slope, and pulls fasteners through. Wind ratings on shingles are real and they vary meaningfully β Owens Corning's Oakridge is rated to 110 mph and its Duration line to 130 mph, which is a difference you can actually buy.
Snow load and temperature swing. Accumulated snow is weight, and it sits for months. A material that's heavy before the snow arrives β tile, slate β has to be carried by a structure designed for it.

Two things to read out of that table. First, service life and cost don't scale together in a useful way for most homeowners: going from architectural asphalt to slate multiplies the price many times over to buy a lifespan longer than you'll own the house. Second, the interesting upgrade in Minnesota isn't the exotic material β it's the Class 4 shingle, which stays inside the asphalt price world while addressing the single thing most likely to end your roof early.

3-tab
A single flat layer with three cut tabs, giving a uniform, slightly flat-looking roof. It's the cheapest option, the fastest to install, and it's built to a price. In this climate the trade is a shorter service life and less margin against wind and hail. It makes sense on a rental, an outbuilding, or a house you're selling in the near term. On a home you plan to keep, the money you save up front tends to come back out of your pocket a decade sooner.
Architectural (dimensional, laminated)
Multiple layers of asphalt-impregnated fiberglass bonded together, giving a thicker profile with visible depth that reads like wood shake from the street. The extra mass is not just cosmetic β it's more material between the weather and your decking, better wind performance, and a longer warranty structure. This is what we put on most of the houses we do, and the price gap over 3-tab is smaller than homeowners expect. Class 4 impact-rated
Impact-rated shingles are built to absorb hail strikes without fracturing the mat underneath. Class 4 is the top rating a shingle can hold. In a hail corridor, this is the upgrade with the clearest logic: it targets the failure mode you're actually exposed to, and it costs a step up rather than a leap. Ask your agent whether your carrier offers a discount for a Class 4 roof. If you're already replacing the roof through a hail claim, price the Class 4 option before you sign anything.
Luxury / designer
Heavier, larger-format shingles that imitate slate or shake. They perform well and they look genuinely different. They cost more, and the performance difference against a good architectural shingle is smaller than the appearance difference. Buy them for how the house will look, not as a durability play.
Metal roofing
Metal earns its reputation here. It sheds snow instead of holding it, it holds up structurally to weather that chews shingles, it requires very little maintenance, and it lasts 30 to 50 years. The trade-offs are real too: a higher upfront cost, noise in heavy rain and hail, and β around here β a shorter list of crews I'd trust to install it.

The other options, and why they're uncommon here
Cedar shakes and shingles. Beautiful, well insulating, and high maintenance. Our wet springs and falls push moisture into wood, and moss and rot follow if the roof isn't kept up. It's a material for an owner who wants that specific look and accepts the upkeep schedule that comes with it.
Clay and concrete tile. Outstanding lifespan and effectively immune to the aging that ends asphalt roofs. The blocker is weight: tile needs a roof structure built to carry it, and the ramblers and split-levels I work on north of the metro weren't. Structural reinforcement changes the project entirely. Tile is also brittle under direct impact, which is an awkward pairing with hail.
Slate. The longest-lived roof material there is, and the same weight and brittleness objections apply, with a higher price attached.
Synthetic and composite. The most interesting of the alternatives. Modern composites imitate slate or cedar at a fraction of the weight, impact-rated versions are available, and they don't rot. The catch is availability: I rarely see composite go on in this market, so quotes swing widely, and product quality varies more between manufacturers than it does in asphalt.
What actually determines how long your roof lasts
This is the section homeowners never get, and it matters more than the material choice above it.
Attic ventilation. A roof needs balanced intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge. Without it, warm moist air stacks up under the decking: it cooks the shingles from below in summer, it condenses in winter, and it warms the roof surface unevenly, which is how ice dams form in the first place. Ventilation is one of the things I most often find done badly on a Minnesota roof, and when I tear off a shingle that never reached its rated life, I usually find a badly vented attic underneath it. Ice and water barrier at the eaves. A self-adhering membrane along the roof edge that seals around fasteners and blocks water that backs up behind an ice dam. Minnesota reroofs include it, and where it stops matters β it needs to extend past the interior wall line to actually cover the cold zone.
Installation quality. Nailing pattern, nail depth, starter course, and where the fasteners land relative to the shingle's nailing zone. Get any of that wrong and the 30-year shingle on the box doesn't behave like one β tabs lift, seals break, and it comes off the house years early. This is not visible from the ground and it's not in the brochure β it's in who you hired.
Flashing. Chimneys, walls, valleys, pipe boots, skylights. On roofs that haven't been storm-damaged, flashing is where I find leaks more than anywhere else β those transitions move more, collect more water, and depend on precise installation. Reused old flashing on a new roof is a shortcut you'll meet again.
Decking condition. Soft or delaminated plywood underneath doesn't hold fasteners. Any honest estimate names a per-sheet price for replacement up front rather than discovering it mid-project.
A roof is a system. The shingle is one layer of it, and it's the layer people spend all their decision-making energy on.
How to choose, for your specific house
Work through it in this order.
How long are you staying? Under ten years, an architectural asphalt shingle is the answer I give at the kitchen table. Twenty years or more, metal and Class 4 asphalt start earning their premium.
Has your address taken hail before? If you've had one claim, you're in a corridor that will produce another. That pushes Class 4 from "nice upgrade" to the default recommendation.
What's the pitch and complexity? Steep roofs with valleys, dormers, and multiple planes cost more in every material and are more sensitive to installation quality. Simple walkable ramblers price well and give you room to spend on the shingle instead of the labor.
What is the attic telling you? If you've had ice dams, frost on the underside of the decking, or unusually high winter bills, fix ventilation and insulation as part of the reroof. Skipping that step means your new roof ages the same way the old one did.
Is insurance involved? If a storm is paying for the roof, the scope is set by the claim β but material upgrades are yours to make. Paying the difference to move from a standard shingle to Class 4 during a covered replacement is the cheapest I've ever seen that upgrade priced β you're only covering the gap, not the roof.
