What goes wrong on Plymouth roofs

Tree cover is the first factor across the older half of the city. Oak and maple over the Medicine Lake and Plymouth Creek neighborhoods drop enough litter to pack valleys by November, and a packed valley holds water on the shingle at the coldest part of the roof. Gutters fill, overflow runs behind the fascia, and the sheathing at the eave softens quietly. Shaded north slopes stay damp, streak with algae and freeze first. Limbs reaching the roof abrade shingles in every wind event.

In the newer northwest subdivisions the problem shifts to geometry and workmanship. Steep primary pitches, two or three intersecting gables, garage returns meeting two story walls, and bonus rooms above garages. Two conditions recur on that kind of build: kickout flashings left off those garage returns, and valleys cut without adequate overlap. Both leak on houses nowhere near needing a new roof, and both show up as soft siding or interior staining rather than anything visible on the shingles.

The vault problem runs through both halves. Above a vaulted ceiling or a bonus room there is little or no attic, so warm air presses against the deck, melts the snow lying on it, and the meltwater refreezes at the cold overhang. That is the ice ridge in the same place every January. The fix is an air channel above the insulation, real intake at the soffit and air sealing of the bypasses. Adding shingles changes nothing, and chipping the ice off with a hammer usually costs you the shingles underneath.

National Weather Service storm reports for July 27, 2025 log hail in Plymouth at one inch, one and three quarter inches, and one and a quarter inches two miles northeast of the city, three separate reports from the same storm. That same evening the NWS measured a 62 mph gust at the Crystal airport and a 60 mph gust just south southwest of Roseville. On June 28, 2025 the wind event that crossed the metro snapped trees in Crystal, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park immediately southeast of here.
