Edina sits directly southwest of Minneapolis in Hennepin County, and it has a wider spread of housing eras than almost any suburb in the metro. The Country Club District and Morningside date to the 1920s and 1930s, with steep pitches, dormers, tile and slate era detailing, and brick chimneys that need real flashing. The Cahill and Southdale neighborhoods are postwar ramblers and split levels. Parkwood Knolls, Indian Hills and the streets around Braemar brought larger houses through the 1960s and into the 1990s. What goes wrong on Edina roofs

In the older districts the recurring issue is detail work rather than shingle age. Country Club and Morningside houses have steep pitches that need staging, multiple dormers, tight valleys, and masonry chimneys whose counterflashing has usually been tarred rather than cut into the mortar. A tarred chimney will hold for a couple of Minnesota winters and then let water in behind it, and the owner spends years replacing plaster while the actual defect sits four feet up the flue. Many of these homes also carry decorative roof forms, curved eaves, low slope porch roofs and copper details that need a crew willing to slow down rather than rush a tear off.

In the postwar neighborhoods around Cahill and Southdale the problem is airflow. Those attics were built without intake ventilation, and later retrofits added exhaust at the ridge without ever opening the soffit. Blown insulation gets pushed into the eave and seals what little intake existed. The attic then bakes shingles from below in summer and holds moisture in winter, which is why a shingle rated for thirty years comes off an Edina rambler after twenty and why an ice ridge forms on the same eave every February.

In the larger newer homes on the west side the issue is complexity and tree cover together. Steep pitches, multiple gables, garage returns into two story walls, vaulted rooms, and mature oaks overhead. Kickouts left off, packed valleys and ice over unventilated vaults account for most of that picture. Low slope porch and entry roofs, common across the whole city, are their own category. Asphalt shingles are permitted at 2:12 and steeper. Slopes from 2:12 up to, but not including, 4:12 require double underlayment. Below 2:12, use a roof covering approved for that slope, often a membrane system. Plenty of these porches sit under the line, and where they sit just above it the second layer of underlayment is often missing.

National Weather Service storm reports for July 28, 2025 log trees down in Edina including some on Valley View Road, alongside a 59 mph gust measured just east of Richfield and 60 mph measured at the airport. On September 21, 2025 hail from one inch to two inches was measured across Minnetonka and Deephaven a short distance west.
