Attic ventilation is the defining condition in this city, and it is close to universal in the postwar housing. Those attics were framed before intake ventilation was standard practice. Reroofs since have added ridge or box vents on top without ever opening the eave, and energy retrofits have pushed blown insulation into the soffit until whatever intake existed disappeared behind it. Exhaust with no intake does not move air through an attic. It pulls conditioned air out of the living space, bakes the shingles from below in July, and grows frost on the sheathing in January. Slopes from 2:12 up to, but not including, 4:12 require double underlayment. Below 2:12, use a roof covering approved for that slope, often a membrane system. Shallow sections on this housing often fall under that line, or sit just above it with a single layer of underlayment beneath them. Either way the section holds water at the seams and eventually pushes it into the wall.

On July 28, 2025 the NWS logged a tree down across much of Main Street at 37th in Columbia Heights, immediately south of the city line.
