What goes wrong on Lino Lakes roofs

Lot size shapes the job here before anything else does. Lino Lakes parcels are large, many of them back onto wetland or open water, and the houses that went up on them from the 1990s onward are wide, with long unbroken eave runs, attached three car garages and walkout backs. That is a lot of roof area feeding a gutter system that was usually sized by habit rather than by measurement. In a hard rain the overflow goes over the front of the trough and lands at the foundation, which on a wet parcel is the last place it should be going.

Roof geometry is the second factor. Houses of that era in this city carry steep primary pitches, several intersecting gables, a garage return running into a two story wall, and a vaulted great room or a bonus room above the garage. The junctions are what fail. A kickout flashing left off a garage return sends water behind the siding instead of into the gutter, and a valley cut without enough overlap sheds water sideways under the adjacent course. Both produce leaks on houses nowhere near needing a new roof.

Third is the vault. Strip the attic out from over a room and household heat ends up pressed straight onto the boards. Snow lying there thaws from beneath, the water runs to the unheated overhang and locks up. Same band, same spot, every January. It wants a vented gap over the insulation, an eave that genuinely draws, and the gaps in the ceiling below closed off. Another course of shingles does nothing at all. Heavy oak and pine over these lots then pack the valleys and fill the gutters on top of all that.

Storm and hail work in Lino Lakes

Lino Lakes has been named directly in storm reports twice recently. National Weather Service reports for July 28, 2025 log multiple reports of trees down in Lino Lakes, filed from just west southwest of Centerville, on the same evening the NWS recorded an eight to ten inch tree snapped north of Coon Rapids and branches broken along Highway 65 north of Blaine. On June 9, 2026 the NWS logged many trees down in Centerville, immediately east, along with several trees down in Shoreview to the south. On June 19, 2026 a hail line crossed the north metro and produced quarter sized hail at Fridley and half dollar hail at Columbia Heights, reaching over two inches further east. Storm reports for June 19, 2026 are public too.

Wind that brings down mature trees will lift and crease shingles on a sound roof, and a creased shingle does not leak until it cracks through the following winter. Hail is the less predictable half. Hardness, the wind pushing them, which shingle is up there, how it was fastened and how old the covering is all matter. The result ranges from lost granules through a bruised mat to a torn surface, and little of it is visible from below.
