Gutters, Soffit, Fascia & Siding in the Twin Cities

The roof gets all the attention, but in Minnesota the exterior system around it decides how long the roof actually lasts. Gutters, soffit, fascia, and siding form one continuous water and air management assembly. When one piece is undersized, blocked, or rotted, the failure shows up somewhere else — usually as a stained ceiling, a soaked rim joist, or ice hanging off the eave in February.

Start with water volume. Twin Cities summer storms drop rain in short, violent bursts, and a 5-inch K-style gutter on a large steep roof simply cannot move that much water. It overshoots at the valleys, dumps against the foundation, and over a few seasons that is what saturates a basement wall. Six-inch seamless aluminum with oversized downspouts handles the same roof without overflowing, and because it is rolled on site there are no lap seams every ten feet to work loose and drip. Seams are where nearly every gutter leak we repair started.

Then there is winter. A gutter full of maple seeds and shingle granules in November becomes a solid block of ice by January. That ice traps meltwater on the roof edge, backs it under the shingles, and is a direct contributor to ice dams — the leak shows up inside, but the cause was a clogged trough and poor attic ventilation working together. Clearing gutters and checking downspout discharge in late fall is one of the cheapest pieces of protection a Minnesota homeowner can buy.

Soffit and fascia are structural and functional, not trim. The fascia carries your gutter hangers, so rotted fascia means gutters that pull away under snow load. The soffit is where your attic takes in intake air; painted-over or blocked soffit vents strangle the ventilation path and cook the shingles from below. When we find rot at a soffit return, the real cause is almost always upstream — a failed gutter joint or a missing kick-out flashing.

Siding closes the assembly. It sheds bulk water, protects sheathing, and takes the same hail hits your roof does, which is why siding and roofing are so often replaced together on one claim and one scaffold set.
