Choosing a roofing material in Minnesota is not the same decision it is in Arizona or Georgia. Our roofs get freeze-thaw cycling from October to April, snow load that sits for weeks, ice at the eaves, hail in June, and summer deck temperatures that can run well over 140 degrees. A material that performs beautifully in a mild climate can fail here in half its rated life, so the honest question is never "what is the best shingle" — it is which system survives this specific set of stresses on your specific roof.
For the overwhelming majority of Twin Cities homes the answer is a laminated architectural asphalt shingle, and the grade you pick inside that category matters more than the brand on the wrapper. Three-tab shingles are a single thin layer and are effectively obsolete on new residential work here; they tear at the seal strip in high wind and show hail bruising almost immediately. Laminated shingles bond two layers, which gives them mass, a much better wind rating, and meaningfully better hail resistance. Above that sit SBS-modified impact-resistant shingles, which add a rubberized polymer to the asphalt so the mat flexes instead of fracturing when a hailstone lands. In hail-prone parts of the metro those often earn an insurance discount that pays back part of the upgrade.
Metal is the other serious option, and it belongs on some houses more than others. A standing-seam metal roof will outlast two or three asphalt roofs, sheds snow well, and handles wind exceptionally, but it costs multiples more up front, and many Minnesota policies exclude cosmetic hail denting on metal panels. It is a genuinely good long-term investment on the right structure with the right expectations.
The parts nobody photographs matter just as much. Ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, a synthetic underlayment across the field, correctly sized intake and exhaust ventilation, and properly fastened soft metals are what actually keep water out. A premium shingle over bad ventilation cooks from underneath and fails early — every time.
